Earlier this year, the Black Crowes somehow figured out that the negative review of Warpaint which ran in Blender — now also the home of former Charlottesville music writer Rob Sheffield, incidentally — had been written by someone who hadn’t even listened to the album. We haven’t heard it either, so we’d better choose our words carefully… but hey, at least “Shake Your Money Maker” still rocks, right?

Warpaint isn’t their best by any stretch (that would be the The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, or possibly LIONS), but the Crowes still put on a helluva show — witness the capacity crowd at the Pavillion in September 2006 and again at a deuce of Virginia shows on Aug. 4-5 in Richmond and Loudoun County, respectively.
Perpetual personnel changes and squabbling betwixt the Robinson boys aside, the Crowes are still “the most rock and roll rock and roll band” on earth.
If rock and roll can save your soul, the Black Crowes deliver moments of pure sonic transcendence.
