Nashville’s powerhouse Black Diamond Heavies sear together blues, punk, and garage rock with the sort of raw, primitive drive that can only come from a minimalist turn-on-a-dime lineup, and do so compellingly enough to draw like-minded Black Key Dan Auerbach away from his own duo to play producer.

Local garage rockers Corsair and Richmond punks Channel 43 open.

A Cosmonaut's Ruin

Chunky local metal band A Cosmonaut’s Ruin drops a chunky vinyl plate on you with this show, the release party for their new 7″ record “The Inverse Of Man,” an imposing and chaotic document of the perpetually-enraged riffs they’ve been working up in the two years since their last release. Don’t you dare show up without earplugs.

A Cosmonaut’s Ruin - The Inverse Of Man
A Cosmonaut’s Ruin - A Fire To Erase The Sun

Though it’s hard to imagine why playing in a Sublime tribute band could ever be artistically unfulfilling (cough cough, sorry, something in my throat), that’s what happened to the Badfish guys, who have been inciting riots among evergreen college stoner audiences with “April 26th” ever since 2001 — which, it should be noted, was only four years after Brad Nowell died; is there a minimum waiting period for this sort of thing?

Thus, from about 2006 onward, Scotty Don’t, whose reggae-rock original tunes are inspired by, but no longer carbon-copy mimicry of, one of the most influential rock bands of the 90’s.

6 Day Bender

$7

This local favorite, which makes their “mountain rock” using both traditional bluegrass instruments and blazing amplifiers, took their show on the road recently, touring all over the Southeast until they killed the van and had no choice but to stop. Instead, they’ve been preparing their recent recordings for release — possibly even an EP for to be released in time for the show (nobody seems to know for sure yet), but most importantly, the next album, which is now tentatively titled Deliverance, rather than 200 Roses, as frontman Luke Nutting told us a few months back, and expected by the end of the year.

6 Day Bender - Kick Out The Fire
6 Day Bender - Devil Lets You Dance
6 Day Bender

Opening: The Moderate, who inject a little of their North Carolina twang into the DC rock world to substantial acclaim, and C-ville’s own Vevlo Eel.

The Moderate - Lost Boy
The Moderate - Chapel Hill

Dar Williams

by Vijith Assar
published 11:08am Friday Jul 31, 2009

$35

If Dar Williams hadn’t written “If I Wrote You,” she might not have turned into the folk-rock icon she is; in retrospect, the song which later became her calling card now seems to mark the breaking point between her developmentally awkward earliest pieces and her ability to effortlessly knock them out of the park, as seen in “Empire,” “End Of The Summer,” “Are You Out There,” and so on. Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers open even though they’d probably be worth a headlining slot on any other night.

Dar Williams - It’s Alright

The Extraordinaires

The not-at-all-incorrectly-monikered Extraordinaires may be based in Philadelphia at this point, but since three of the dudes grew up in Charlottesville, we get to share in the festivities surrounding the release of their new “album” Electric and Benevolent.

The Extraordinaires - 2012 Overture [unmastered]
The Extraordinaires - Eloise [unmastered]
The Extraordinaires - Terzetto [unmastered]

Quotation marks? Why, that’s because just like their last few albums, this new one comes with the best packaging ever: a hardcover book, this time telling the story of a brilliant inventor around the turn of the 20th century.

The Extraordinaires - Hi-Five The Cactus
The Extraordinaires - Neighborhood Watch
The Extraordinaires - The Captain
The Extraordinaires - A Proud Salute

Well, then there was that came bundled with a board game. Still, you get the idea.

The Extraordinaires - The Chicken, the Egg, or the Song?
The Extraordinaires - The Confession Of Kyle Griever

Local rock wunderkind Adam Smith and alt-country figurehead Sarah White open, making this a seriously powerhouse lineup.
