A forthcoming book reports that when televangelist and Liberty University founder Jerry Falwell died last May, he did so having lost most of his multi-million dollar fortune on a bad real estate deal. Forbes reporter Dirk Smillie writes in Falwell, Inc. that Falwell had sunk $20 million into building Liberty Village– a “Christian community” atop Candler’s Mountain near Lynchburg, complete with 1,135 homes, a movie theater, a chapel, and a supermarket. Presently, the site is a training facility for the Lynchburg City Police’s SWAT team.

Isn’t this supposed to read Candler’s Mountain? I’ve never heard of a Chandler’s Mountain near Lynchburg.

Thomas Jefferson died broke too. Hmmmmm?

  • lindsay August 7th, 2008 | 4:18 pm

Yes, of course, it’s Candler’s Mountain. That’s a typo on my part.

Thanks for the catch, and thanks for reading.

    Sincerely,

Uh, did you not pay attention to the news after the NY Daily News ran the story. The Forbes writer of the book says he has no idea where the tabloid got the information but it wasn’t from his book.

Yet another case of why print journalism is dying quickly right now.

Is the Hook fact-checking the primary source on this story since Sly Fox’s entry two hours ago? Did Lindsay read the book or rely on the rag of a second hand source?
