Hook gets wrong hours, F-bomb
published 3:55pm Thursday May 15, 2008
Someone claiming to be associated with Maya, the restaurant reviewed in this issue, pointed out that we botched the restaurant’s hours (totally this editor’s and not the reviewer’s fault), insisted that his restaurant used fresh whipped cream, dropped an F-bomb, and left. We do apologize about the whipped cream disbelief but particularly for the wrong hours. From maya-restaurant.com, here are the right ones: Maya’s bar is open 4:30pm to 2am daily. Maya’s kitchen is open from 5 to 10pm Sunday through Thursday and 5 to 11pm Friday and Saturday.

Fresh cream makes me swear, too.
Is that going to be the Hook’s regular food reviewer? I know nothing about him, but I hope he will work on expanding his reviews beyond laundry lists of “we ordered this, then she ordered this, then we had this…”.
It makes for less than thrilling reading.
I guess it is true. No one can make a mistake without completely being butchered for it. God knows that everyone else doesn’t make a mistake.
The menu looks awesome.
I am glad they have a vegetarian option on the menu (which sounds like it might be quite good), but they should at least spell it correctly…It’s “seitan,” not “sietan.”
Honestly, I was thinking about Maya for this evening’s dinner, because by and large Oldham made the food sound very good, but now the f-bomb/blow-up over the whipped cream and the hours of operation–does everyone in the restaurant business think they have to talk like Anthony Bourdain? there’s a lot of really nice restaurants in town. I think I don’t have to give my money to one like that, no matter how good the food is.
Richard, are you familiar with the genre of a restaurant review? It pretty much boils down to “we ordered this, it tasted like this.” I thought it was well-written and not full of pretentious wish-I-were-a-novelist crap.
Good luck finding a table anywhere this weekend, Cecil. With the influx of graduation traffic, we may both be standing in long lines.
Well, your review of the place was pretty effing awful. Get a new food reviewer or I’m moving to the C-Ville.
Nev31, what was wrong with the review in your mind?
Maybe the person from Maya is practicing for next year’s edition of “Hell’s Kitchen.”
Moving to the C-ville for what? I haven’t seen any restaurant reviews in there.
I LOVED loved loved the new feature.
Canned whip cream is pretty easy to spot and taste… if it’s white-white and appears to be shaped by a “pastry tip,” I bet it’s aerosol. But if the dessert’s homemade, so what? I’d be way more concerned about the grouper smelling fishy (it’s no mackerel) or a dry pie crust (shortening alert!), and even with those, so what? Grouper’s a fish! Pie crust preferences are subjective! If this makes someone curious who wasn’t before, it’s a success.
I thought Oldham’s review was quite well-written and informative. But man, some of the chefs and restaurant owners in Charlottesville have overblown egos. Oldham didn’t write anything deserving of such a histrionic and petulant reaction. It’s a restaurant review, not the bloody Constitution. Why get your panties in such a twist?
Agreed with Cecil: the review itself doesn’t make me want to avoid this place at all, however the Maya representative’s reaction to the review will keep me away.
