Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke passed away at his home in Sri Lanka yesterday at the age of 90. In remembrance of his life, Virginia Quarterly Review has made available on its website Clarke’s 1960 VQR essay “Shaw and the Sound Barrier,” about a conversation he had about space travel with Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. Eight years he would pen his most famous works– the concurrent screenplay and novel, 2001: A Space Odyssey.
