It was ideal fall weather for a football game, and it ended ideally for the home team, as the Monticello Mustangs crushed the Poquoson Islanders today in the Division III state semifinals. A highly anticipated game, this one featured the 11-1 Mustangs, who won the Regional title by knocking off John Handley— thanks in no small part to running back Takeem Hedgeman, who went into the game with 340 carries, 2,546 yards, and a mind-boggling 45 touchdowns this season. Despite the prediction by the Newport News paper that its hometown team would prevail, Monticello handily won 46-7.
