Snap o’ the day: a blazing ginkgo

Some folks had been saying that Central Virginia wouldn’t have a phat phall pholiage season. But, yesterday morning at around 8:30am, this ginkgo biloba near UVA’s Clemons Library was lighting up University Avenue. Each fall, young Wahoos passing under female ginkgos think they’ve come upon vomit. That’s understandable, since this sidewalk is just footsteps from the bars of Corner district, but the smell is actually just rotting ginkgo (or “stinko“) fruit.

    Also, the fruit of the Ginko is highly valued in parts of asia. At the same time that some students are holding their noses, you’ll often see Asian students out there gathering the fruit!
