Gilmore ends ‘08 presidential bid

On Saturday, former Virginia governor Jim Gilmore declared he was dropping out of the race to be the Republican nominee for President in 2008. “It has become apparent to me that the combination of my late start [he declared his candidacy in January], and the front loaded nature of the primary schedule, have made it impractical to continue to pursue this path towards further public service,” Gilmore said in a press release. However, Virginia has not seen the last of Gov. “No Car Tax.” Gilmore ends the withdrawal announcement by saying he is, “actively looking for other opportunities to continue in public service in the Commonwealth of Virginia,” fueling speculation he will run for Sen. John Warner’s seat in 2008, should the 80-year-old senator retire, or again for the governor’s mansion in 2009.

That, and his epiphany that no one had any interest in his candidacy.
Jim Gilmore seems to have a significantly higher opinion of himself than anybody in Virginia who remembers what a great job he did as governor. Thank God there was a decent Democrat in the wings to lift us out of the perilous financial hole he put us in.
Does anybody really think this guy is electable? Frankly, I’d love to see him run for Senate vs. Mark Warner.
Gilmore: “I ended the car tax. Well, kinda.”
Warner: “I bailed the state out after you kinda ended the car tax.”
If anyone thinks he can’t win in Virginia you clearly haven’t been one block outside of this college village. Other than NOVA, this state is as red as my blood. Provided you don’t call anyone a monkey boy you will win.
Do the names “Mark Warner,” “Tim Kaine,” or “Jim Webb” ring any bells for you? All moderate Democrats who took down wingnuts or moderate Republicans.
Maybe Virginia isn’t blue, but it’s damn sure purple (see http://www.princeton.edu/~rvdb/JAVA/election2004/PurpleAmericaPosterAll50_small.gif) and becoming more hostile for the GOP every year. It’s even on the verge of being declared a swing state for the 08 presidential election.
Anybody can bail himself out of financial difficulties by giving himself a massive raise. Speaking of Mark Warner, didn’t he have presidential aspirations dashed recently? Perhaps he, too, will run for Warner’s seat as a tax-and-borrow-in-order-to-spend candidate. Music Lover’s comments seeem to reflect an adherence to Larry Sabato’s opinion formed in this little college village.
Jim Webb is not a moderate. He won because George Allen said something really stupid.
