Mark Warner won’t run in 2008

According to an online Washington Post dispatch, former Virginia governor Mark Warner, long seen as a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for president in 2008, will announce today that he will not run for president at an 11am press conference at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.

Because he had been spending a lot of time in the key primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina, and raised over $9 million for his Forward Together political action committee, Warner found himself the the man to beat.

“That does not make sense– he’s the odds-on favorite,” says local Republican activist Tyler Sewell. “Does Hillary have the goods on him?”

Even today, Warner was supposed to fly to Des Moines to campaign for state legislative candidates and meet with Iowa business leaders, according to the Associated Press.

“Sadly, it’s time for the Democrats to win the White House, says Sewell, “and he was the man. That’s a shame. He’s basically a great guy.”

    Watching what happened to Sen. Allen may have given him pause. Or he could have decided to be a VP canidate by running for Govenor again in 07.
