The long winter is over, and spring should be arriving any minute, so Albemarle County is brimming with festivals and fairs.
Although rain was an uninvited guest for the fourth year in a row, the burg of Batesville successfully celebrated "Batesville Day" Saturday, May 17. A true community affair, this small-town festival started with a foot race, then climaxed with a parade through the center of town.
The carnival atmosphere abounded, with plenty of games to entertain the kiddies. A group of entrepreneurial students from J.T. Henley Middle School hawked $1 tattoos, while others sold raffle tickets for baked goods such as a Miss Albemarle Barbie cake. Proceeds from Batesville Day go to the Batesville Ruritans and also the Friends Who Care food ministry.
It's nice to see that the volunteer spirit is alive and well so close to home. Batesville truly is a great example of a community pulling together to help those less fortunate.
