Talk to local teachers
As a local public educator, I read your story about zero tolerance policies with interest. [March 6: "Zero tolerance=zero common sense?"] (http://www.readthehook.com/93150/news-zero-tolerancezero-common-sense)
Student safety is always a top priority for everyone involved in the schools. I am thrilled that you decided to include the perspective of teachers in your story, as we are an often overlooked voice in policy debates.
However, I am disappointed that you chose to speak to a teacher's group that has no presence in your circulation area rather than speaking to the local office of the National Education Association/Virginia Education Association.
The Blue Ridge uniServ office represents 1900 educators in Charlottesville, Albemarle, Nelson, Greene, Buckingham, Orange, Louisa, Madison and Cumberland.
That office could have easily directed you to a local teacher who would have provided you with a more relevant and insightful perspective.
