Intolerance is Un-American

I read with interest your brief interview with Sheriff Ed Robb [Hot Seat, "Ed Robb: Tales of fooling the Mafia," January 16, 2003] ( I find the sheriff's intolerance for people with political opinions different from his to be most unfortunate.

I believe such intolerance to be un-American. He may as well have said that there are too many black people in Albemarle County. Or too many Southern Baptists. It's all equally offensive.

What confidence can his remarks inspire that as sheriff he will enforce the law equitably and without bias? How can we imagine that he is fit to hold an office of public trust that obliges him to render service to his fellow citizens without regard to political affiliation? Unlike those nations in the axis of evil, our own form of government welcomes political difference.
