Good rape news?

In reference to "Dealing with a serial rapist: Professionals weigh in"[January 16, 2003], it's sad that we can't escape fear-mongering even in The Hook.

Your cover would have us believe we're in a crisis. If one were to take the time to interpret your statistics– which you conveniently fail to do– she'd realize that rape in Charlottesville was down nearly 50 percent last year from the year before, that is, from small to significantly smaller.

The headline for the article should instead have been titled "Good news for women." But that wouldn't have catered to our fear-based society.
