On Thursday, September 26, two days after massive trees were felled, crews began clearing the site for UVA's controversial $17.5 million, 1,180-space parking garage. The garage, however, may eventually occupy just the rear part of the 7.2-acre site, as plans call for dormitories fronting Ivy Road. Although no suits have been filed to block what critics have called the "1,200-car monster," UVA can begin construction as soon as VDOT approves the scope of a second major traffic study.
