Wind farm advances… with conditions

Virginia's first proposed wind farm cleared one hurdle last week and encountered another, according to media reports. The 19-turbine project slated for Highland County would cover a ridge with 400-foot-tall turbines to produce electricity in a supposedly clean fashion.

According to reports in the Roanoke Times and the Richmond Times-Dispatch, a judge dismissed a claim from some adjacent landowners, but the state's Department of Environmental Quality has requested additional testing over the lethality of the project for birds and bats.

The Highland County project was the subject of the Hook's March 16 cover story.
