Webb to speak for Dems after State of the Union

For the second year in a row, a Virginian will deliver the Democratic response to President Bush's State of the Union address. Following hot on the heels of Governor Tim Kaine's rebuttal in 2006, Senator Jim Webb has been tapped by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to speak to the nation on behalf of his party.

"I am honored to have been selected to deliver this response," said Webb in a statement. "I ran for the United States Senate to bring an experienced set of eyes to the problems that face our country, ranging from the need for a new direction in Iraq to assuring economic fairness for American workers."

The plum assignment is just the latest in a series of coups for Webb. Since defeating George Allen in November and swinging the Senate's balance of power to the left, Webb has won prestigious posts on the Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees.

The State of the Union and Webb's response will happen next Tuesday, January 23.
