Shifflett, ‘wife’ appear in court

Elvis Gene Shifflett, the man shot by Charlottesville police October 20 after a seven-day manhunt, appeared in court yesterday to face the woman he is accused of assaulting. After listening to the testimony of Linda Shifflett and the owner of Court Square Tavern, juvenile and domestic relations judge Edward DeJ. Berry certified felony charges against Shifflett, according to the Daily Progress.

The Progress explains that even though Linda and Elvis lived together and shared a last name, they were not married. This is the first time that her name has appeared in a media account of the incidents.

Why is this newsworthy? It's 2007.

Let's now list the cops who live with their girlfriends and aren't married as well. Let's list all the police chiefs (and cops) who have had extramarital affairs while married. :)

your're missing the point, Steve...the way I read it, it's meant to explain that even though they share the last name they're not married....if you didn't say that people would naturally assume they were married. It's not saying, "oooh, they were living together and they weren't married...what a scandal!" As the legalities of this play out, wether they are married or not will matter, especially to the kids.

I think Steve is way out in left field. If a cop has an extramarital affair that doesn't cost me, the individual taxpayer, money, I don't care. On the other hand I am REALLY TIRED of paying for other people's kids due to carelessness, stupidity, laziness, or a combination of all of the above. Kids require health care, sometimes expensive hospital stays, food, shelter, schooling, transportation, etc, and smart married people who use protection when they step out on their spouse are not my problem. Baby making fools are. Learn the difference and you will be a better citizen.

I didn't miss the point as much as you might think. While this history might be important to the court or the children, it's none of the public's business. No more than knowing a recently retired (and married at the time) sheriff had a child out of wedlock with one of his girlfriends back in the 90s. See my point? :)

The Criminal Justice System should explore the skeletons in their own closet before releasing facts about others.

So you know for a fact that public assistance has provided funds to the children of this Shifflett guy? Or did you just ass-u-me this?
