Demo site to be ‘pocket garden’

West Main will soon get a pocket garden. What's a pocket garden? Well, it's a bit like a New York City-style pocket park– only smaller.

The pocket garden will stand on the site of a little brick and glass structure, formerly Papa John's pizza delivery shop. Before being demolished in mid-January, the small structure stood beside the 1907 Patton Mansion, which now serves as a SunTrust bank branch.

Demolition was long planned and was reported here back in 2004 when UVA announced it had purchased the property for its medical center's Core Lab building that opened in June 2005.

"The reason it wasn't taken down right away was we used the building for construction offices by the contractor," says UVA spokesperson Carol Wood. "It was not considered aesthetically pleasing attached to the Patton Mansion."
What will be pleasing for West Main Street walkers is the pocket garden, Wood hopes. She says the next phase is to construct a retaining wall and add some backfill to create a plaza with shrubs, plants, and seating.
