Hoedown set for late great ‘Slate Hill Phil’

Friends of "Slate Hill Phil" will gather tomorrow night to play music by the young musician who died of mysterious causes in late December.

Tomorrow's celebration commemorates a young man who helped shape the local blues and bluegrass scenes: Phillip Allen Gianniny who founded the Slate Hill Boys and was a member of both the Hogwaller Ramblers and the Hackensaw Boys, died on the morning of December 23 at the home of his grandmother in Charlottesville. A cause of death was not revealed.

Gianniny, 31, left behind a 12-year-old daughter, and it's to support her that this musical evening was designed. Longtime friend and occasional bandmate Jamie Dyer says the event will take place Saturday inside the old National Linen Building at the corner of Mead and Market Streets. Performers include Lovell Coleman. No admission fee; pay what you want.
