JPJ named best new venue

As if more evidence were needed that Charlottesville has quickly become a live music hub, the John Paul Jones Arena has been named "Best new major concert venue" by industry publication Pollstar. Beating out the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York, JPJ– through its general manager, Larry Wilson, accepted the award at a ceremony in L.A. last Thursday.

The other local nominee for a Pollstar award, Dave Matthews Band manager Coran Capshaw, in the personal manager category, fell to Bob McLynn, who guides altie bands Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco.

The other winner of some (slight) local note is Dale "Opie" Skjerseth, the road manager for the Rolling Stones on their record-breaking "A Bigger Bang" tour. Pollstar named Skjerseth best "road warrior" for overseeing the globe-spanning events including the mammoth set construction and performance at Scott Stadium in October, 2005.

isn't this old news?

Bow down to the Crapshaw. DMB is the only artist that has ever created true music.

This is deserved. I've probably been to over 300 arena and stadium concerts, and JPJ may have the best acoustics of all of them. Whoever did the acoustic engineering just flat-out nailed it.

Speaking of music, hey HOOK - how about a story about the local country station's refusal to play Dixie Chicks?
