CHS Debaters bring home gold

Competing against 19 other schools, Charlottesville High School took the top prize in the recent Broad Run Invitational Debate Tournament. According to a City release, the CHS team won not only first place in debate and student congress, it also won the tournament sweepstakes known as the Spartan Cup.
As the only undefeated varsity debater, Luke Allen received a first place prize in debate and runner-up for the best speaker award. Another undefeated debater was Lizzie Hylton, a member of the junior varsity team. She also took first place in debate and was runner-up for the best speaker award.
Ivy McCall, another member of the junior varsity team, took home fourth place in debate. But how 'bout Student Congress member Simon Wiener? He was awarded first place and named champion speaker in the November 3 event.

I can only assume these winners benefitted from their education in the debate team. It's great to see students excelling despite what we hear from some of the parents and teachers.
