Crazy Cakes on the Mall

If y'all are crazy for gourmet cookies, cupcakes, and other baked treats, you might want to check out Cappellino's Crazy Cakes when they open on the Downtown Mall in May. Apparently, owner Frank Cappellino and his sister Dotty are two very talented bakers.

"His cakes leave you speechless," says Judith Carlin, a co-worker of Dotty's at Worldstrides. " Aside from being well prepared, he customizes them. For my birthday, he made me a George Bush theme cake that was hysterical."

A transplant from Florida, who had a shop there for 8 years, Frank Cappellino says he's been designing cakes for years. The downtown shop, he says, will be serving up artistically decorated cakes and cupcakes, cookies, and the best Key Lime pie you've ever had, he says. Plus, his sister Dotty will be offering her signature pound cake, which is already sold at places like the Greenwood Store and Whole Foods.

"It's going to be one of the hottest little places in the Charlottesville area," he says.

Indeed, if the cookie samples he dropped off here at the office are any indication of what's to come, y'all are in for a treat.

"My experience has been the prettier the cake the worse it tastes, but that is not the case with Frank's cakes," says Carlin. " They taste as good as they look."

Crazy Cakes will be located at 103 North 3rd Street, right across the way from Fleurie.

I have had Frank's Cakes, tasty. HOWEVER, I seriouslyseriouslseriously doubt his Key Lime Pie will be better than my own. Good luck Frank!

Awesome! I have a serious sweet tooth and I've always been disappointed with my baked goods options on the Mall for mid afternoon escape from the office cravings - there's only so many Mudhouse pumpkin squares you can eat. Ever since Fuel closed, there's been a brownie vaacum I hope this will fill.

I have had the oppritunity to taste these cakes and they are awesome! So pretty and very tasty! The red velvet is my personal favorite. The buttercream frosting is to die for! Agreed...Charlottesville is in for a real treat!
