No bond for Fairway suspects
Judge Bob Downer denied bond to two of the three accused perpetrators in last Tuesday's fatal shooting on Fairway Avenue this morning in Charlottesville District Court.
Appearing via video from the Charlottesville Albemarle Regional Jail, both 28-year-old Curtis Tyrell Montague (top left) and 22-year-old Candace Marie Williams (bottom left) were offered a court-appointed attorney. Under questioning from Downer, Montague revealed he was released from jail in November after serving six months following a parole violation
for a prior drug possession charge. Williams is awaiting sentencing for welfare fraud, a reduced charge to which she plead guilty in Charlottesville Circuit Court.
Williams' father and older sister appeared in court, with her father offering to allow his younger daughter to stay with him if it would assure her release. Downer, mentioning the seriousness of the charges and her upcoming sentencing date for fraud, declined bond as the video feed showed Williams suddenly slumping in her seat with her head hung forward. Following the brief hearing, Williams' sister, 27-year-old Rhiannon Williams, defended her younger sister outside court.
"She's a good person," she said. "She's had a rough life." She wept when asked about Williams two daughters, aged three years old and 10 months old, confirming the girls are currently in her care.
"She wasn't the ring leader," she said of her sister. "She just got caught up with the wrong people."
Montague, Williams, and the third alleged perpetrator, Jada Marie Dubrose Dickerson– all of whom face first degree murder charges in addition to a slew of other charges relating to the shooting and two robberies– will next appear in Charlottesville District Court on May 1 at 1pm to schedule a preliminary hearing.
