Panda Transport

Panda Transport's CD release show at Zinc is definitely the can't-miss event of the night. Habitual crotch-puncher Kathy Compton met French musician Thierry Holweck when both were working on solo projects and hit it off as mutual musical advisers and confidants during the two years Compton spent in France. They only realized they made a good team shortly before she was to return to the States, thus kicking off what unfortunately had to be a transatlantic collaboration which had them internetting song fragments to one another and saving every penny for airfare.

The result is Plush Mechanique, a debut which is built on understated vocals and sparse electronic loops. It's also one of the more unique projects to come out from around these parts – we don't know of another local album that has used the Cher effect. But Compton doesn't think she's all that different underneath from the other folks you'll find performing around town this week – "Our drummer is an iPod," she says, "but it's still about having fun."
