Long day for Chris in NFL debut

Chris Long is the only Cavalier football player to have his number retired before playing his final game in orange and blue.

Yesterday, former UVA defensive end Chris Long made his NFL debut with the St. Louis Rams. Wearing #72, he played on the road against the Philadelphia Eagles. Long recorded two tackles, his first in the NFL coming with 8:13 left in the 1st quarter, stopping Eagles running back Bryan Westbrook for a three-yard gain.

However, Long's highlight reel would prove short, as he was largely outmatched Sunday by Eagles left tackle Tra Thomas, a three-time Pro Bowl selection who is also four inches and 72 pounds bigger. The Rams lost to the Eagles 38-3.

While Long wasn't entirely pleased with his first NFL outing, he did say that he valued the early education he got from Thomas.

"I knew [Thomas] was a great player. I might have gotten him a couple of times, but he got me a lot," Long told the Philadelphia Daily News. "It's good to know that's as good a guy as you're going to see."

Long will take the field next at home at the Edward Jones Dome next Sunday at 1pm against the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

The UVA Cavaliers really coulda used his talents here this season....

No surprises here. It's extremely rare when the #2 pick goes to a good team, and that's definitely not the case here. He's going to have many long days this year.

At least he came to play. It seemed like so many of his teammates didn't.

Chris had a great day for an NFL rookie, he had two tackles for losses and came close to sacking mc nabb twice if he had the two sacks they would be saying hes going to hall of fame.

That team needs some coaching and some leadership, there is no life and they dont look prepared

Put Chris long on a pressure happy team like the Eagles and he's breaking sack records
