UVA Sculpture invites participation in "Baking Bread Burning Bush"

William Bennett, "Fire Tower."
Detail from William Bennet's plan for "Baking Bread, Burning Bush."

SSSUN (Solar Scuptors + Scientists United Now) and the University of Virginia sculpture department invites the public to join "Baking Bread Burning Bush," a performance event in which 100+ particpants holding 100+ mirrors will direct the energy of the sun to bake bread and create fire. (Please bring your own mirror, although free mirrors will be given to the first 100 participants.) The schedule is as follows:

  • 11:30am Doors open.
  • 12 noon Solar oven ignited and bread baked.
  • 12:30pm 100+ mirrors ignite fire.
  • 1pm Bread eating and celebration.

Full sun is required for this event, so any cloud cover postpones the event until the next sunny business day (i.e. Monday, November 3; Tuesday, November 4, etc.). Andre Rubley Courtyard of Ruffin Hall, north slope of Carr's Hill (near Beta Bridge). 179 Culbreth Road. For more information contact “Boriska” whb@virginia.edu.

Being Anita'a cousin, I am admittedly biased. However, I am constantly impressed by her energy level, how she maintains her focus on her craft, and takes on new challenges like the Atlas, while juggling the never-ending needs of her two children. You go, girl!

It's good to hear you're doing well.
