Your honest assessment of mommy porn is right on target. When i see and read about celebrity moms having it all -- an amazing career, motherhood, great hair every day, it's easy to forget they have it all because they have tons of help to do so. Like celebrities that appear thin and toned because they have a personal trainer daily and a state-of-the-art gym in their homes... But it's up to us (real life moms) to remember reality is harder! Let's give ourselves a break. We don't have to be perfect - just happy.
Erin-
I'm not sure that Ms. Trunk is ever going to see your comment. Unlike some of our local columnists--like Dr. Hook or the Sports Doctor--she lives in Wisconsin, and is just syndicating older posts from her blog. This piece is almost a month old, from here: http://blog.penelopetrunk.com/2008/06/10/the-hardest-part-of-my-job-is-t...
She might not be tracking comments that aren't made at her website.
You're absolutely right that real-life moms (and some dads, too) shouldn't sell themselves short when it's time to recognize all of the hard work that they put into maintaining their family. And happiness is definitely more important than perfection.
However, Trunk's implied hardship rings false to me. I think that since she has already written about how she is paying $50K a year for a "house manager" here: http://www.readthehook.com/stories/2008/05/08/BRAZEN-0719-marryStayHomeS...
she counts as one of those moms with "tons of help" that you describe.
I guess that you and I are lucky that she has the time to open up this dialogue while other parents take care of the kids.
