On this day, FDR declared 'bank holiday'

On this date in 1933, amid another financial crisis, president Franklin Delano Roosevelt closed all American banks. Not all of them were allowed to reopen.

A lot of people are being given unwanted holidays without pay from their jobs, and some of them will probably not return.

I was talking to a woman at the Mall and she said their hours are being cut and they are paid dependent on what they sell so their earnings are decreasing and some of the big retailers such as Belk have stopped making matching contributions to their 401K accounts.

The unemployment number is just part of the story ---

Dear Ms. Trunk,
I'm 57 and have a masters degree from UVA but can't even get an interview. Reality sucks at this age but we move on. Thanks for your article, it helps me move on. I am now trying to pursue a juggling career. Please see www.partnerjuggling.com view the video clip and let me know if you think I should give up my 10.00/hr part time jobs.
Thanks,
Randy Mayo

I'd be willing to bet that Ms. Trunk is a JEW.

How do you categorize degree hoppers, those who collect degrees and certificates, but don't have a solid career to stand on?

I don't entirely understand this article. For one thing, it makes no difference between graduate and professional school. Who goes to "graduate school" for four years and then has $80,000 in debt? Probably doctors, but that seems like a reasonable investment over the long run. On the other hand, you have people who go to professional schools in business and law for 2 or 3 years and may have $100,000 in debt or people who go to graduate school for 5 or 6 years and have no debt because they have fellowships. Both options may be useful or not if the person wants that career path.

I would also add to number four that often employers do not want to feel obligated to pay someone more money just because they have a grad degree and therefore decide not to call a particular person in for an interview. I have been on several hiring committees and while I never thought that way-I wanted the best staff member, the HR reps and the budget people usually did.
