I'm not sure I agree with the statement "Penn State's win over Michigan had nothing to do with Joe Paterno and success came in spite of JoePa, not because of him".
We don't know how involved Joe Paterno is in pregame preparation, film analysis and adjustments made during the course of a football game. My hunch is he is very involved in all.
And you cannot discount his presence on the coaching field and the impact that has on players - not to mention he recruited the players that are now making the difference.
I think it is unrealistic to assume that if you fire Joe Paterno the team does not miss a beat (ask the folks at Nebraska that question about Mr. Osborne) or that because he is not on the sideline he is not doing the majority of coaching and mostly responsible for the W's. There are a lot of OC's in the NFL that are very much responsible for their team's wins and they never step on the field during a game. An argument can be made that Joe is MORE effective in the box.
But I think most of us associated with PSU (alumni, Trustees, etc.) feel that is a mute point. Coach Paterno has earned the right to step down when he chooses and so long as he is winning we should leve it alone.
My goodness, with all the failed "leadership" we are now witnessing throughout our society (from CEOs to Government) we should be appreciative that we have the likes of Joe Paterno. He has arguably done more for college football than anyone else in the history of the game.
It's an honor to watch him. Coach Paterno is an icon, a hero, a legend and a great man. Let us enjoy him while we still can.
Penn is Univ of Pennsylvania, PSU is Penn State
This is arguably the worst attempt at an argument I've ever seen anywhere, regardless of topic. "The better Joe Paterno coaches, the louder his critics shriek." Are you joking? Your entire premise seems based on a quote from one columnist — not a local beat writer, but an out-of-state columnist who "covered" Penn State for a matter of days this season — and the premise is ludicrous. Have you ever covered a Penn State game? Have you ever spoken to Paterno or any of his players or coaches, or a university administrator? Nothing you've written implies that you have. Please, next time, before you get anywhere near a keyboard, find a topic you might actually have a clue about.

After an article like this maybe you should hang it up.
Amazing, where does this man get his logic from. This is the worst article written in college sports. It is almost a mirror image of one written by a lame writer for USA Today. They need to do their research before they start slamming JoPa. He has more than earned the right to choose his exit as he chooses. (For reasons far too numerous to mention). He is one of the few pillars of integrity left in college football. (Bowden is another). Mrs. Giles employent and ability as a writer should be seriously questioned. She shouldn't quit her waitress job, to continue as a sports writr.
