I am a collateral descendant through Meriwether Lewis'mother's family.and am also interested in any findings on exhumation. The Grinder's testimony was probably self-serving. There was a subsequent inquest and testimony that later surfaced of an eyewitness to Lewis' final moments,he having crawled to a spring, not mentioned above, giving more credence to the possibility of murder. This is quite different from the Grinder testimony.

Megan Marlatt did a fabulous series of collaged drawings for a 2000 UVA site specific exhibition dealing with Jefferson's legacy as interpredted by contemporary artists. Ms Marlatt's work was inspired by 7 crates of specimens that Lewis shipped to Thomas Jefferson from a Mandam Village encountered on his voyage. Not only is this an awe inspiring interpretation of these objects, but a visual portrayal of Lewis's tormented state of mind. A truly monumental achievement for an artist and a must see for any serious student of Meriwether Lewis.

Ms. Marlatt is a professor at the University of Virginia and has a studio in Orange Virginia.

These drawing are truly brilliant !
