Pantops says, "Hello Kitty!"
Adopting a cat is about to get easier thanks to the SPCA's satellite– err, cat-ellite– adoption center in the Pantops shopping center. Purrin' at Pantops, next to Rudy's Dry Cleaners, hosts a grand opening celebration– appropriately titled "Hello Kitty"– on Sunday, May 3 with face painting, kiddie activities, refreshments and, of course, adoptions.

I think the SPCA has always done a great job.
Is this satellite operation the reason why the SPCA is demanding more tax money?
Cville Eye -- the satellite operation has nothing to do with it. The SPCA needs more money because of the mass volume of animals that come in every year, and the amount of money it costs to take care of them until they're adopted. Since they're a no-kill shelter, the Pantops facility is one way that they can house all the animals and promote them for adoption. They'd need the space somewhere.
Besides that, this article fails to mention that they've had a facility at Pantops for years. They've just moved. Not entirely sure where this new one is, but the old one was near the Food Lion.
Sick, I'm an SPCA volunteer and I adopt out cats. Admittedly I don't know much about the dog adoption process, but I don't know what's so difficult about the cats that it makes you feel like you're applying for National Security Clearance. While I've never applied for that, I'm guessing it involves more than two forms, $75 (if there's no sale going on) and 20-30 minutes of your time, depending on how fast you can write. I don't think it's unreasonable that we ask people to put in a little time and consideration when they're bringing an animal into their home that will require time and money for years to come.
M, isn't the rent at Pantops expensive?
I don't know what the Pantops rent is. I do remember there was an issue awhile back where they couldn't renew their lease -- maybe that's why they moved -- but I don't know if it was rent-related.
The reason they moved is because Chic Hair was promised the space that the Purrin' @ Pantops cats were in. Chic Hair had to move because The Parrot Restaurant needed to expand and The Parrot wanted the former Chic Hair space. As for the rent, numerous volunteers and patrons each pledged to gave $25.00 per year to be earmarked for Purrin' @ Pantops, and that covers the cost of the rent.
I am impressed with the work done by our local SPCA.
But, having said the above, I am not fond of their adoption policies and procedures. I realize they are in place for a good reason, but for the last 15 years I feel like I am applying for a National Security clearance when adopting a pet. I've pretty much resorted to buying purebred dogs from breeders, and adopting kittens by word of mouth. Or even more recently, a little kitten adopted my family. Showed up as a stray, got fed twice a day, put on a few pounds and refused to leave. Worked her way into the home in the matter of a few weeks, watches TV, lounges anywhere, slaps the other pets around!! Smart kitten! :)
forget cats and dogs i'm getting a lynx!

Wanted to add to my last comment that I'd say about 1/4 or 1/5 of the many cats I encounter at the SPCA have their intake reason listed as "owner surrender -- allergic to pet" or "children did not get along with animal" or something like that. I believe that these sorts of situations could be avoided many times if people did not act on impulse and spent some time thinking and talking with family members before getting a cat or dog. That's one reason why the adoption process involves more than just writing out a check.
Thank you to everyone who attended our Purrin' @ Pantops Grand Opening event on Sunday. There was lots of fun and excitement for the kids and everyone had a great time.
