Montpelier, the historic home of James and Dolley Madison, hosts local Civil War reenactors of the 3rd Regiment of the Army of Northern Virginia who are rebuilding several period huts using the same construction techniques and materials that Confederate troops would have used in the depths of the winter of 1863-1864. Visitors can watch the process along with a live fire demonstration of Civil War-era weapons. The encampment lies behind the Gilmore Cabin: Freedman's Farm on Route 20 opposite the main entrance to Montpelier.11407 Constitution Highway/Rt. 20 in Orange. 540-672-2728.
