Ash Lawn-Highland, home of President James Monroe, was home to yet another very important Virginian, Reverend John E. Massey. Reverend Massey played a major role in the history of Virginia from the mid to late nineteenth century. After Massey moved in1862 to Ash Lawn-as it was then known-he immediately became a part in the Confederate States war effort. He raised grain which would help feed the soldiers and also allowed them to use his fields as campsites. On several occasions he preached to them as well. Experience Christmas 1862 with the encampment of the 23rd Virginia Infantry Regiment, and an evening tour of the James Monroe estate that stresses Rev. John Massey's time there during the Civil War. Rev. Massey will be available to greet visitors, and there will be a special reading of letters from home by members of the 23rd. Light refreshments will be served. 1000 James Monroe Parkway. 293-8000.
