Ben Folds
Nasal-voiced pop-rock songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ben Folds helmed Chapel Hill alt-rock band Ben Folds Five (actually a trio) until their dissolution around 2000, after which Folds launched a solo career shockingly quickly, with the quirky hit "Rockin The Suburbs" doing exactly as promised upon its release on September 11, 2001. (An atrociously bad time to release such a quirky record, you'd think, but to this day it remains his most popular). This is not to gloss over the fact that Folds can have remarkable depth as a songwriter, however, when he's not in doofus mode (rare) – for proof, look to "Still Fighting It" from that same album or perhaps "Don't Change Your Plans" from the earlier Five era. 5:1 odds say he doesn't play "Brick," though.

Remember Merton, the guy who took to the popular new random-videoconferencing site ChatRoulette with his piano and improvised songs about the people it randomly matched him with? A few folks started wondering if Ben was the man underneath the hoodie, which he insists is not the case, but he nonetheless has started using the format live at his last couple shows. Cross your fingers and hope he sticks with it.
