In the wake of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Americans are talking seriously about gun control and ways to keep students safer. Is arming teachers a legitimate consideration? Governor McDonnell and at least one Virginia state senator seem to think so. Not everyone agrees.
Message in a bottle
Fifty years ago, Charlottesvillians buried a time capsule. Alas, when it was dug up this year, water had damaged most of the contents. Hopefully, that won't be the case for the new capsule, which was sealed in December as part of the city's 250th birthday celebration and will be stored safely– indoors– until 2062. What's in there?
Roger Ebert didn't think a filmmaker could capture the terror of the 2004 tsunami better than Clint Eastwood did in The Hereafter. He hadn't seen The Impossible yet. Starring Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, this one, Ebert says, has Oscar written all over it.
The next shooter
We don't know the name of the next school shooter yet, but we can be all but certain it's a "he." Essayist Hilary Holladay paints a picture of the young man who hasn't yet taken action. He is out there.
