Staunton Food Day fun!

Yikes, Dish had no idea this was coming up tomorrow. Sounds fun! So here's some of the press release we just got:

On the heals of National Food Day, the public is invited to downtown Staunton Friday, October 28 from 5 to 8pm to taste, touch, and discuss the amazing ways food helps shape our local community.

Highlighted venues will include restaurants serving locally grown foods (including the always enticing Baja Bean Company, Cranberry’s Grocery and Eatery, Darjeeling Café, Emilio’s, Mockingbird, Shenandoah Hops, the Split Banana, Staunton Grocery, and others), and hands-on activities will celebrate how healthy local food touches all aspects of our daily lives, generating partnerships across unexpected local industries:

- At the Train Station, Post 36, a manufacturer of local artisan clothing apparel, will showcase their inclusion of homemade natural dyes (from sources as diverse as used coffee grounds from the downtown Mugshots Coffeehouse, to black walnut hulls from backyard trees), transforming food waste into fashion.

- Joining Post 36 at the Station will be Mike Lund Food, a new start-up business offering cooking classes featuring local foods, as well as the Shenandoah Valley Beekeepers Association, helping bring food production into our backyards.

- Raw Learning, a local elementary school program, will create an interactive learning program at the Sacred Circle bookstore, an outgrowth of their experiential learning garden planted this fall at Mary Baldwin College.

- Virginia Natural Health will be at George Bowers Grocery, discussing how wholesome foods impact our health and wellness.

- Local farms Nu-Beginning Farm and Dancing Star Farms will be at Darjeeling Café, discussing both their growing methods and also how consumers can participate in their community supported agriculture (CSA) programs.

- With fun for the whole family, facepainting at the Split Banana keeps the fun in food, and reminds us that celebration is a healthy part of any meal.

- Staunton Creative Community Fund and Staunton Green 2020 will join forces at the Train Station with Post 36 to highlight available funding and resource opportunities for green businesses – from sustainable farms, to locally sourcing restaurants, to creative reuse of waste-food products.

Staunton Food Day is a community event jointly organized by Mary Baldwin College, the Staunton Creative Community Fund, and Staunton Green 2020.

We can’t wait to see what grassroots connections continue to unfold throughout Friday’s celebration.”
